The effects of cut aways - Chapter Seven

The cutaways Hosseini uses in chapter seven of The Kite Runner create many different effects, such as:

  •   Inferring that the actions occurring in the alley were to horrific to describe.

  •   Creates the impression that Amir is trying his best to block out what is happening to Hassan, be that by bringing up old memories or going of at a tangent "the look of the lamb"

  •   The guilt Amir is feeling and how close the two (Amir and Hassan) actually were by depicting the previous statement of "brotherhood between people that have fed from the same breast".

  •  Hosseini describing how Hassan was refused to have his fortune told reiterates just how gruesome the actions occurring actually are and possibly pointing out that Hassans life, as a Hazara, was going to be negative purely because of his heritage (the fortune teller will read Amirs but not Hassans  possibly because Hassan in a Hazara).

  •  The last cutaway is used to show the contrasts between Hassans old life "Hassan, Ali, Baba and I" to the reality that that life is falling apart by every passing second that Amir doesn't react or defend Hassan.

  • The ambiguity of not knowing what was exactly happens creates an air of intrigue.

  • The use of the image of a "snowstorm" links to how Amir was feeling at the time of the attack, he was lost and had no idea where to turn or what to do, exactly how you would act in the middle of a blizard.
